SAC Challenge 2015 – Week 1

Fred Bevan

My song for this week is Where I need to be. This is a collaboration with James McGee. James discusses the collaboration in his blog: http://www.jamesmcgeemusic.com/words_thecowrite.html.

The entire challenge was a great experience. Some weeks, it was not easy to complete a song on time but the participants and coaches were extremely helpful and supportive. I would definitely enter a challenge like this again.

SAC Challenge 2015 – Week 6 – Writing for Radio

My song for the Week 6 Challenge – Writing for Radio is Journey of Your Life. I wrote this one about my daughter leaving home. My first version went against pretty much all of the guidelines for writing for radio. The intro, solo and time to first chorus were all too long. Thanks to some great feedback from Debra Alexandra, I resolved these in the current version. This was a great learning experience.

Journey of Your Life

One last check then you close up the suitcase
It should be everything you need
Little brother asks if you really have to go
You say you’re gonna miss him too
But life keeps on changing
His time will be coming soon
And it’s gonna be amazing

This is the journey of your life
Remember the way you feel tonight
These are the times. They’ll be in your heart forever
This is the journey of your life

One last look as you stand in the driveway of the house you grew up in
Feels like you’re leaving everything you ever knew
Packed up and your driving away
Home town behind you
You’re not sure what you’re feeling today
So darling let your heart guide you

This is the journey of your life
Remember the way you feel tonight
These are the times. They’ll be in your heart forever
This is the journey of your life

SAC Challenge – Week 5 – Write for a new TV Series about Love, Lust, Hate and Danger

This was fun!

My concept was that people know in their hearts that they will eventually have to answer for the evil things that they do. They will always be looking over their shoulder for the one person that will see through their lies and take them down. It is a fear that haunts them everyday. Who will be the person that finally stops them? The answer is in my songs title: I’m the one!

I’m the One
by Fred Bevan

You always knew the day would come
To answer for the things you’ve done
You fooled them all with your web of lies
Didn’t care if they live or die

Your evil heart is your only friend
You’ll be alone when you reach the end
Someone will beat you, you’ll be outdone
Well start running because I’m the one
I’m the one
I’m the one

I know the things that you do in the night
Hidden from the light of the sun
Somebody’s watching you
I’m the one
I’m the one
I’m the one

You know I won’t forget your face
Try to hide but I live for the chase
I’m on a mission and I’ll see it through
Your in my sights and I’m coming for you
I’m the one
I’m the one

I know the things that you do in the night
Hidden from the light of the sun
Somebody’s watching you
I’m the one
I’m the one
I’m the one

SAC Challenge – Week 2

Here is my submission for week 2.

Inspiration for the song:

A couple of weeks ago my wife and I visited our daughter at her university residence. Mostly first year students are in residence (17 and 18 years old), so they fit at the upper end of the target market. As I was leaving, the movie Frozen was blasting (BLASTING!) from one of the rooms. When we got down to the parking lot, the song “For the first time in forever” was playing. The only thing louder than the movie was the sound of girls singing, laughing and squealing. Although I couldn’t see them, I just know that they were standing on furniture with their arms fully extended as they belted out the chorus.

It was over-the-top adorable and really helped me to stay focused on the task.

Unfortunately, I can’t sing it and I didn’t finish in time to find a singer. I have included a version with the melody played on guitar so it is pretty easy to follow the words as you listen.

Please enjoy and “Celebrate another day of life”
https://soundcloud.com/fredbe…/celebrate-another-day-of-life

Here are the words:

I don’t think there’s ever been a day that felt so right
Words could never tell the way I feel
It’s gonna be a amazing when I meet my friends tonight
We’ll get a little crazy – no big deal

Chorus
We’ll dance until morning
We’ll laugh all night long
We won’t care who hears us when we sing our favourite song

We’ll feel like this forever
Would that be so wrong?
We’re just having fun and we’re not causing any harm

We’ve got love in our hearts
For everyone we see
That’s the way were are and that’s the way we want to be

We’re not complicated
And all we want tonight
Is to celebrate another day of life

Yes, we we’ve seen the problems and the danger in this world
We get a little scared from time to time
So we’ll watch out for each other as we find our way through life
You know I’ve got your back and you’ve got mine

Repeat chorus

SAC Challenge 2015 – Week 3 – Writing for Advertising

Requirement:

  • features a child
  • vibe needs to be light, playful, child-like, purely fun (not emotional or nostalgic)
  • 60 seconds with the potential for 30 second or 15 second cut-downs

Ideas

  • To achieve the child-like vibe – write in first-person from child’s perspective
  • Looked for opportunities to inject humour (helps to keep things light)
  • Listen to the suggested songs
  • I don’t know what the commercial is about. I’ll picture a young boy playing with his best friend.
  • Keep it simple musically – probably 3 tracks of acoustic guitar
  • Title: What we’re gonna do today

What we’re gonna do today:

https://soundcloud.com/fredbevan/what-we-are-going-to-do-today

Words:

What we’ll do today

Today we’ll dig a hole. We’ll make it nice and deep
We’ll climb in with our toys and all our favourite things to eat

We’re going to build ramp
That goes half way to the sky
If we can ride our bikes real fast we might just make them fly

Then we’ll go down to the river, build a raft and sail away
That’s what we’re going to do today

That’s what we’re going to do today

Belting it out on campus!

Hey guys,

The week 2 challenge sounds fun and should definitely take many of us miles from our comfort zone. I wanted to share a short story that I will keep in mind as I work on the challenge.

It was over-the-top adorable and probably the type of reaction that we should be shooting for.

I hope that some of you found this amusing and perhaps helpful. Have fun!!
